In 2026, Sportico valued the cumulative 30 MLS franchises at $23 billion, an average of $767 million per club.32 The Philadelphia Union is valued at $740 million, generating $80 million in revenue in 2025, which produces a valuation-to-revenue multiple of 9.25x.33

MLS franchises consistently command high multiples; Inter Miami ($1.45B value / $200M revenue) trades at 7.25x, and the LA Galaxy ($1.17B value / $110M revenue) trades at 10.6x.34 By comparison, elite European clubs with vastly superior sporting histories trade at significantly lower multiples; Real Madrid generated $1.13 billion in revenue in 2025 against a $6.53 billion valuation (5.8x).35

This premium valuation multiple is driven by structural factors unique to North American soccer:

  1. Closed Ecosystem Stability: The absence of promotion and relegation eliminates the financial volatility inherent in European soccer, safeguarding long-term investor capital regardless of seasonal performance.36
  2. Media Rights Guarantees: The league's 10-year global broadcasting deal with Apple TV pays $200 million annually through 2026, scaling to $275 million annually by 2027.37
  3. Real Estate Portfolios: Clubs are valued as multi-asset holding companies. The Union’s $740 million valuation is physically backed by Subaru Park, the $100 million WSFS Bank Sportsplex, and adjacent waterfront commercial developments.38

[5] 2 Synchronizing with Global Liquidity [source]

The primary hurdle for MLS academies exporting players has historically been market misalignment. MLS operated on a spring-to-fall schedule, while the European market operates fall-to-spring. The bulk of global transfer spending occurs in July and August. Consequently, MLS clubs frequently faced the dilemma of selling a star player in the middle of a playoff run or refusing a lucrative European bid.39

Beginning with the 2027–2028 season, MLS will transition to a summer-to-spring schedule, perfectly aligning with the FIFA international match calendar and the primary European transfer window.40

This synchronization fundamentally alters the financial mechanics of the league. When the global transfer market opens in July, MLS clubs will be in their pre-season. Executives can seamlessly export academy assets at peak market valuations and reinvest the capital into roster construction before domestic competition begins.40 By removing the sporting penalty for mid-season sales, the 2027 calendar shift optimizes MLS clubs as primary nodes in the global transfer market, cementing the academy as the most critical profit center for franchise sustainability.
